ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Title: Door valance and side panels with dragons
Date: 17th–18th century
Period: Qing dynasty (1644–1911) Kangxi Period (1662-1722)
Medium: Silk and metallic thread brocade
Door valance and side panels with dragons were produced during Emperor Kangxi's rule, (1661–1722), whose reign brought about long-term stability and relative wealth after years of war and chaos in China. Dragons are widely used in Chinese mythology. In this instance, the dragons signify the emperor as the Son of Heaven - serving as a link between heaven and earth, on behalf of the people. While the exact origin is not known, the quality of the piece suggests that it once decorated a doorway in an imperial residence in the 17th or 18th century Qing Dynasty.
